What are QR Codes?
A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) that is designed to be read by smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be text, a URL, SMS, IM, the web or open certain functions on your phone.
If you have a smart phone, you can go to your phone’s marketplace and download what is called a “QR code reader”. It is available on Android and Apple phones. Once installed, you simply open the QR code reader and look for the scan option. Then you hold your phone over the QR code to scan it. Many companies provide incentives for scanning their barcodes.
Below are some incentives:
• Coupons
• Discount on products
• Giveaway items
They are everywhere!
Have you noticed these codes everywhere? Toothpaste tubes to cereal boxes. They are in many magazines to whisk you from a print source to a web source. It is a way to easily bypass the need to open a browser and type in a URL. It’s just faster and it brings the user to engagement.
A forecast:
1 in 2 Americans will have a smartphone by Christmas 2011. If this is true churches need to jump to be relevant to the mobile viewer!
How can your church use QR Codes?
A few ideas are:
- Invite cards, DoorHangers & Church Postcards – As featured above – include a QR code on a postcard that leads to a Google Map. This way the person scanning it can get turn by turn directions to your services.
- Business cards or Banners – There is no room for details on a business card or banner! A QR code is a great way to get the reader to more information on a webpage. The QR code can even lead to a video about your church/pastor or even a welcome video.
